The capital of India is New Delhi. With nearly 1 billion people, India ranks second only to China in population. A large majority of the population is of the Hindu faith.
 
Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was a social and religious reformer who used passive resistance against British rule in India. This resistance eventually led to India's independence in 1947. Mahatma is Sanskrit for "great soul."
 
Tigers
Bengal tigers are found in central and southern India. Full grown tigers measure 10 feet long (including their tails) and weigh from 400 to 569 pounds. Tigers have been hunted to near extinction by poachers, and therefore, have been declared an endagered species. The Kanha Tiger Reserve in northern India was created by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1973.
